Project Overview:
SSWA was retained to investigate noise and vibration concerns affecting residential units in a multi-storey building in Florida, United States. The issue was related to a ground-floor gym facility located directly below residential suites, where occupants reported noticeable disturbance from gym activities.
Challenges
The project involved a complex structure-borne vibration issue within an occupied residential building, where gym activities were generating low-frequency impact noise that travelled through the building structure. The dropping of weights and use of heavy exercise equipment created impulsive forces that were transmitted through the concrete slab and structural elements, resulting in audible disturbance within the units above.
The challenge was further compounded by the existing building conditions, as the gym was already constructed and operational, limiting the ability to implement large-scale structural modifications. A targeted and practical solution was required to address the most critical sources of vibration while maintaining the functionality of the gym.
Approach
SSWA conducted a site visit to the residential units and gym facility to observe the conditions firsthand and assess the nature of the noise and vibration. The assessment focused on identifying the primary sources of impact, including specific pieces of equipment and areas where weight-dropping activities were concentrated.
The review considered how vibration energy was transferred from gym equipment into the structure and re-radiated as audible noise in the space above, allowing for a clear understanding of the underlying issue and potential mitigation strategies.
Results and Solutions
The investigation confirmed that noise within the residential units was primarily caused by structure-borne vibration generated by gym equipment, particularly from the dropping of weights and high-impact activities. These vibrations were transmitted through the building structure and re-emitted as low-frequency noise within the suites above.
The study also identified specific equipment and localized areas within the gym that contributed most significantly to the issue, allowing mitigation efforts to be focused where they would be most effective.
SSWA developed a targeted vibration control strategy focused on isolating key sources of impact rather than requiring full reconstruction of the gym floor. This included the use of high-performance vibration isolation pads beneath specific pieces of equipment, as well as localized isolation treatment in designated weight-dropping areas.
The recommended measures were designed to significantly reduce vibration transfer through the structure while maintaining flexibility for gym operations. Solutions were selected to be practical, cost-effective, and compatible with the existing building conditions.
Outcome
The study provided a clear and implementable strategy to reduce noise and vibration impacts within the residential units while maintaining the functionality of the gym facility. By focusing on targeted isolation measures, the approach addressed the root cause of the issue without requiring major structural changes.
